EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intellectual and scholarly spirit of Christophe de Longueil, a prominent Flemish humanist of the 16th century. Born in Lille, France in 1488, Longueil was a renowned scholar, poet, and translator, who made significant contributions to the advancement of humanist thought in the Low Countries. Longueil's scholarly pursuits led him to become a close associate of Erasmus of Rotterdam, the celebrated Dutch humanist and philosopher. The two men shared a deep commitment to the study of classical texts and the promotion of learning, and Erasmus is said to have referred to Longueil as his "beloved brother in letters." This portrait, created in 1522, offers a glimpse into the intellectual world of this remarkable man. Longueil is depicted in profile, wearing a simple, dark robe and a fur-trimmed hat, which was a common style among humanist scholars of the time. His beard, neatly trimmed and well-groomed, frames his thoughtful expression, which suggests a man deeply engaged in contemplation. The portrait also reveals Longueil's love for the classics. In his left hand, he holds a book, which is open to a page filled with Latin text. The book's title, visible at the bottom of the page, reads "Cicero," indicating Longueil's deep connection to the works of the great Roman philosopher. Longueil's legacy as a humanist thinker and scholar continued to influence the intellectual world long after his death in 1536. His translations of classical texts, including works by Cicero and Seneca, helped to spread humanist ideas throughout Europe and beyond. Today, this portrait serves as a reminder of Longueil's enduring impact on the history of humanist thought and the importance of scholarly inquiry in shaping the world around us.
