Phoenicura Frontalis, Phoenicura Leucocephala. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains

Phoenicura Frontalis, Phoenicura Leucocephala. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of Phoenicura Frontalis and Phoenicura Leucocephala, two stunning bird species found in the majestic Himalaya Mountains. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork is a testament to their remarkable talent and passion for ornithology. John Gould, known as the "bird-stuffer" by the Zoological Society, was captivated by birds from the east since a collection from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these avian wonders, he conceived an ambitious project to publish a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously made drawings of each bird before transferring them onto large lithographic stones. The resulting prints are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". The image captures every intricate detail of these Asian beauties – their exotic plumage, elegant tails, and distinctive markings. It transports us back to early 19th-century natural history exploration when British artists like John Gould were at the forefront of documenting Earth's diverse fauna. Today, this photograph print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a valuable scientific record. Its vibrant colors and close-up perspective allow us to appreciate nature's marvels while providing insight into animal behavior and patterns. Displayed within books or manuscripts or admired on its own merits, this piece from Quint Lox's Liszt Collection offers a glimpse into our planet's rich biodiversity through the lens of talented European artists who dedicated their lives to capturing its essence.
