VISUAL DESCRIPTION
This is an image of "The Lady and the Unicorn: À Mon Seul Désir, " a medieval tapestry from the series often considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe. The scene depicts a noble lady standing in front of a tent, across from her maid who is holding up a chest. The lady places jewelry or some object into the chest, suggesting themes of wealth and material possession. To her left stands a unicorn with its front legs placed on her lap, symbolizing purity and grace, while to her right sits a lion representing strength and nobility. The background is filled with flora and fauna as well as other animals like rabbits and birds amidst trees which may represent an idyllic garden or forest setting. Above them are banners bearing heraldic symbols floating against a deep red field scattered with flowers and other motifs. This particular piece has been interpreted in various ways but commonly represents love or understanding that true happiness does not come solely from material possessions ("À Mon Seul Désir" translates to "To My Sole Desire"). It's part of six tapestries designed in Flanders during the late 15th century based on drawings from Paris around 1500 for Jean Le Viste, each depicting one sense along with this final enigmatic representation possibly alluding to heart or will overriding senses.
