Amedeo Modigliani Beatrice Portrait de BA atrice Hastings
Amedeo Modigliani: Beatrice (Portrait de Beatrice Hastings), Amedeo Modigliani, 1916, Oil on canvas with newsprint, A British poet and journalist, Beatrice Hastings moved to Paris in 1914, where she quickly became absorbed into the thriving avant-garde scene in Montparnasse. Hastings met Modigliani at the cafe de la Rotunde, a popular gathering place for the bohemian crowd, and the pair began a stormy two-year relationship; both were creative, defiant, and prone to theatricality. Hastings posed for Modigliani at least fourteen times. In this portrait, Modigliani experiments with the language of cubism, translating his sitter into sharp, blocky forms. At one time there was a strip of newspaper pasted to the surface, perhaps a reference to Hastings profession; you can see traces of newsprint ink in the background, just below her name. Overall: 21 3/4 × 15 1/16 in. (55.2 × 38.2 cm)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Amedeo Modigliani's "Beatrice (Portrait de Beatrice Hastings)" painting. Created in 1916, this oil on canvas with newsprint artwork showcases the enigmatic British poet and journalist, Beatrice Hastings. After moving to Paris in 1914, Hastings quickly immersed herself in the vibrant avant-garde scene of Montparnasse. It was at the renowned cafe de la Rotunde where she crossed paths with Modigliani, sparking a tumultuous two-year relationship between two fiercely creative souls. Modigliani's experimental approach is evident in this portrait as he incorporates elements of cubism to transform his subject into sharp and blocky forms. Interestingly, there was once a strip of newspaper pasted onto the surface, possibly alluding to Hastings' profession as a journalist. Faint traces of newsprint ink can still be seen in the background just below her name. Measuring approximately 21 3/4 by 15 1/16 inches (55.2 by 38.2 cm), this print beautifully encapsulates Modigliani's artistic vision and his deep connection with Beatrice Hastings during their time together.
