EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the historic moment of the re-launch of HMS Windsor Castle on September 14, 1852, at Pembroke Dockyard. Originally launched in 1849 as a 140-gun first rate warship, HMS Windsor Castle underwent significant modifications in 1852, including lengthening and the installation of new engines, making it the longest three-deck warship in the world at the time. Later that year, the ship was renamed HMS Duke of Wellington in memory of the famous British general. During the Crimean War, HMS Duke of Wellington served as the Baltic flagship, playing a crucial role in the conflict. After the war, it became the flagship of the Commander in Chief Portsmouth. The vessel was eventually sold and broken up in 1904. The launch of HMS Windsor Castle in 1849 was an important event in maritime history, and this engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into that era. The ship's impressive size and the grandeur of the launch ceremony are evident in the image, with numerous dignitaries and onlookers gathered to witness the occasion. The addition of new engines and the lengthening of the ship in 1852 further enhanced its capabilities, making it a formidable presence on the water. This engraving is a testament to the rich maritime heritage of the United Kingdom and the significant role that ships like HMS Windsor Castle played in shaping the country's history. The image also serves as a reminder of the importance of innovation and adaptation in naval warfare, as HMS Windsor Castle's modifications allowed it to remain a valuable asset to the Royal Navy for many years.
