EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher, the enigmatic Empress of France, astride a horse with an expression of both determination and apprehension. The year is 1763, and Marie Josèphe, born in Martinique, has just been proclaimed Queen Consort of France following her marriage to Napoléon Bonaparte. The coronation ceremony, held in Reims Cathedral, was a grand affair, attended by the elite of European society. However, did Marie Josèphe really arrive at her coronation in such an unconventional manner? The image of a precariously balanced monarch on horseback is a dramatic one, but historical records offer no evidence to support this depiction. It is possible that this print is an artistic interpretation, designed to evoke the spirit of adventure and unconventionality that characterized the Empress's life. Marie Josèphe was known for her beauty, intelligence, and strong will. She was a patron of the arts, a skilled horsewoman, and an accomplished gardener. Her marriage to Napoléon was a love match, and she remained devoted to him throughout their tumultuous relationship. Despite her many accomplishments, Marie Josèphe's reign was short-lived. In 1814, following Napoléon's defeat in the War of the Sixth Coalition, the Bourbon monarchy was restored, and Marie Josèphe was exiled from France. She spent her final years in Austria and died in 1814, just months after her husband's defeat. This print, with its intriguing depiction of Marie Josèphe on horseback, offers a glimpse into the complex and fascinating life of this remarkable woman. Whether it accurately reflects the events of her coronation or not, it is a reminder of the enduring allure of royal history and the power of art to capture the imagination.
