Soviet space walk stamp, 1967
Soviet space walk stamp. 1967 postage stamp, published in the USSR to commemorate the worlds first space walk. The stamp artwork shows Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (born 1934), outside the Voskhod 2 spacecraft in a spacesuit on 18 March 1965, while orbiting the Earth (in background). Voskhod 2 had launched earlier that day, and Leonov exited the spacecraft at 08:30 UTC. He remained outside for 10 minutes, before trying to re-enter the spacecraft. Because his suit had ballooned while outside, he had to let some of his air out before he could successfully re-enter. Cameras mounted on the airlock (lower left) were meant to record the space walk, but had to be abandoned due to the spacesuit problems

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Soviet space walk stamp from 1967. Published in the USSR to commemorate the world's first ever space walk, this postage stamp holds immense significance. The artwork on the stamp depicts Alexei Leonov, a courageous Soviet cosmonaut born in 1934, outside the Voskhod 2 spacecraft while orbiting Earth on March 18,1965. The image captures Leonov donning his spacesuit as he floats weightlessly against the backdrop of our planet. It was during this groundbreaking mission that Leonov spent an awe-inspiring ten minutes outside the spacecraft before attempting to re-enter. However, due to complications with his ballooning suit caused by exposure to vacuum conditions, he had to release some air before successfully returning inside. Intriguingly, cameras mounted on the airlock were intended to document this historic event but had to be abandoned due to technical difficulties with Leonov's suit. Nevertheless, this stamp serves as a lasting tribute and reminder of humanity's incredible achievements in space exploration during the mid-20th century. With its detailed illustration and Cyrillic lettering representing "CCCP" (the Russian abbreviation for USSR), this philatelic treasure not only symbolizes scientific progress and technological advancements but also pays homage to Alexei Leonov - a true hero of the Soviet Union and an inspiration for generations fascinated by outer space.
