1860 solar eclipse observation, artwork
1860 solar eclipse observation. Drawing by British artist Joseph Bonomi the Younger (1796-1878) of the darkening of the sky during the total solar eclipse of 18 July 1860. The path of totality for this eclipse passed across North America, the northern Atlantic, Spain, and parts of North Africa. A partial solar eclipse was visible from a much wider region, including all of Europe. Bonomi observed the eclipse on one of several expeditions from the UK that travelled to Spain (these included Warren De La Rue and Lord Lindsay). Bonomi observed the eclipse from a hill near the village of Rivabellosa, near Miranda de Ebro, northern Spain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, created by British artist Joseph Bonomi the Younger in 1860, depicts the mesmerizing darkening of the sky during a total solar eclipse. The illustration showcases the historical observation of this celestial event that occurred on 18 July 1860. Bonomi was part of an expedition from the UK that journeyed to Spain to witness this extraordinary phenomenon. The path of totality for this particular eclipse spanned across North America, the northern Atlantic, Spain, and parts of North Africa. However, even those outside this region were able to witness a partial solar eclipse. In fact, all of Europe had a glimpse into this awe-inspiring spectacle. Bonomi chose to observe the eclipse from a hill near Rivabellosa village in northern Spain's Miranda de Ebro area. Alongside fellow astronomers Warren De La Rue and Lord Lindsay, he meticulously recorded his observations through sketches and watercolor techniques. This remarkable piece not only serves as an artistic representation but also as an invaluable record of scientific research conducted during that era. It offers us a window into history while highlighting humanity's enduring fascination with astronomical phenomena. Science Photo Library brings forth yet another gem from their vast collection - an exquisite testament to our quest for knowledge about our universe's wonders.
