Naming ceremony of Mullions first lifeboat, the Daniel J. Draper, Penzance, Cornwall. 10th September 1867
Launched on 10th September 1867 at Penzance, the boat was a gift from mostly Cornish Wesleyan Methodists in memory of the Reverend Daniel James Draper who perished in the tragic wreck of the SS London in the Bay of Biscay in 1866. The lifeboat remained at Mullion until 1887, performing three services and saving three lives. She was followed by the Edith (1887-1894) and the Nancy Newbon (1894-1908), neither of which were ever used. Photographer: William Brooks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic naming ceremony of Mullion's first lifeboat, the Daniel J. Draper, in Penzance, Cornwall on September 10th, 1867. The launch of this remarkable boat marked a significant moment for the Cornish Wesleyan Methodists who generously gifted it to honor the memory of Reverend Daniel James Draper. Sadly, he lost his life during the tragic wreck of the SS London in the treacherous Bay of Biscay just a year prior. The photograph showcases a group gathered on this momentous occasion as they christen and send off their lifesaving vessel into uncertain waters. The women are dressed elegantly in crinoline dresses with bell-shaped skirts, adding an air of grace to this solemn event. It is a testament to their commitment and dedication towards saving lives at sea. Over its two-decade tenure at Mullion, this valiant lifeboat performed three daring services and successfully saved three precious lives from perilous situations. Following its retirement in 1887, it was succeeded by two other boats - Edith (1887-1894) and Nancy Newbon (1894-1908). However, fate would not grant them an opportunity to fulfill their purpose as neither were ever deployed for rescue missions. Photographed by William Brooks with great skill and precision, this image serves as a poignant reminder of both human tragedy and resilience amidst adversity. Preserved within the archives of Royal Cornwall Museum, it stands
