EDITORS COMMENTS
The War Budget: A Tribute to the Brave - Piper Daniel Laidlaw, Victoria Cross Recipient (Front Cover, 1915) Amidst the chaos and carnage of the Battle of Loos during World War I, on September 25, 1915, a hero emerged. Piper Daniel Laidlaw of the 1st/7th Battalion, The Royal Scots, displayed unparalleled bravery and courage when he led his comrades out of the trenches with the enchanting melody of his bagpipes. As the worst of the bombardment raged on, Piper Laidlaw, a Scottish soldier, observed that his company was becoming disheartened due to the effects of gas. In an instant, he climbed onto the parapet and began to play his pipes, an act that had an immediate effect. The sound of the bagpipes galvanized the soldiers, and they charged out of the trench to join the assault. Piper Laidlaw's heroic actions did not go unnoticed. His inspiring performance continued until he was wounded, but his impact on the battlefield was immeasurable. For his extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British and Commonwealth honors system. This evocative image, featuring a portrait of Piper Daniel Laidlaw, graced the front cover of The War Budget, a publication that paid tribute to the brave soldiers who fought in the Great War. The photograph, taken in 1915, serves as a poignant reminder of the heroism and selflessness displayed by ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances.
