EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu, also known as the "Rex" by Allied forces, on display at Willow Grove Naval Air Station around 1957. The Kyofu, a Japanese naval fighter aircraft from World War II, was captured and taken to Patuxent River Naval Air Station in October 1946. After a period at Patuxent River, the aircraft was transferred to the Naval Aviation Supply Depot in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946. By 1957, it had found a new home at the nearby Willow Grove Naval Air Station. In 1999, the Kyofu was transferred once again, this time to the National Museum of Naval Aviation, where it has been stored pending restoration. The Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu is a significant piece of military aviation history, showcasing the design and engineering capabilities of the Japanese aircraft industry during World War II. Its journey from capture to museum exhibit is a testament to the enduring importance of preserving historical aircraft for future generations.
