VAD Hospital patients taking part in the Sack Bumping Race at the Sports Day organised by the Quex Park VAD Hospital and its Annexe at St Michaels in Birchington. The event was held at the Woodford House School field to raise money for the Birchington War Depot which provided articles to the local hospitals. 8.14s. was raised. Sack Bumping was event No. 2 on the programme. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Major Powell-Cotton was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organising the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. Date: 1918

This photograph depicts a lively moment from the Sack Bumping Race during the Sports Day held at Birchington in 1918. The event took place at the Woodford House School field and was organized by the Quex Park VAD Hospital and its Annexe at St. Michaels. The patients of the hospital, who were recovering from injuries sustained during World War I, enthusiastically participated in this fun competition to raise funds for the Birchington War Depot. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, which opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919, was run by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park. Major Powell-Cotton, who was also the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, played a crucial role in organizing the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. The Sack Bumping Race was the second event on the programme of the day, and it generated a total of 8 shillings and 14 pence in donations. The patients, dressed in their hospital uniforms, can be seen in high spirits as they maneuver their sacks, trying to knock their opponents out of the race. The Woodford House School field, filled with spectators and participants, was alive with energy and camaraderie, making for a memorable day in the history of the Quex Park VAD Hospital.
