EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken on 28 March 1910, we find two pioneering figures of early aviation history: Cecil Stanley Grace and The Hon Charles Stewart Rolls. They are seen here soaring through the skies above Eastchurch in England, each at the controls of their Short-Wright Type A biplanes. This momentous occasion marked a significant milestone in the development of aviation as the first public flight demonstration in the country. The image holds historical significance for another reason as well. A memorial window, dedicated to the memory of these intrepid flyers, was later inserted into Eastchurch Parish Church and unveiled by the Archbishop of Canterbury in August 1912. This poignant tribute serves as a testament to the courage and innovation of Grace and Rolls, who lost their lives in separate flying accidents just a year apart. Cecil Stanley Grace, a British Army officer, began his aviation career in 1908, while Rolls, an automobile manufacturer and aviation enthusiast, joined him in 1909. Together, they made history as the first British aviators to fly a powered aircraft. Their achievements paved the way for the establishment of the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and the growth of the British aviation industry. This photograph, captured during their groundbreaking flight, offers a glimpse into the early days of aviation and the spirit of adventure that drove these pioneers to push the boundaries of human transportation. The memorial window in Eastchurch Parish Church stands as a lasting tribute to their legacy.
