EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard image transports us back in time to the Catacomb of Callixtus in Rome, Italy, where the grave of Saint Cecilia, a renowned patron saint of music, awaits. Dated to the 1910s, this photograph captures the somber yet serene atmosphere of the ancient burial site, which is adorned with flickering candles. The Catacomb of Callixtus, also known as the Cemetery of Callixtus, is one of Rome's most significant catacombs located on the Appian Way. The statue of Saint Cecilia depicted in the image is the work of Stefano Maderno, a prominent Baroque sculptor from the Roman School. Born in 1576, Maderno was a master of his craft, and his sculpture of Saint Cecilia, which was created in the 17th century, is a testament to his artistic skill. The statue shows Saint Cecilia, with her eyes closed in peaceful repose, holding a martyr's palm and a musical organ. The grave of Saint Cecilia was originally located within the catacomb, but in 821, her relics were removed by Pope Paschal I and transferred to the Basilica of San Cecilia in Trastevere. Despite this, the grave remains an essential pilgrimage site for many, and the statue continues to draw visitors from around the world. The image of the grave of Saint Cecilia, bathed in the soft glow of flickering candles, is a poignant reminder of the rich history and spiritual significance of the Catacomb of Callixtus and the enduring legacy of Stefano Maderno's masterful sculpture.
