EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of triumph and discovery during the final days of World War II, as Allied forces successfully secured the capture of a German V2 rocket, also known as the Aggregat 4 or A-4 missile, in October 1945. The V2 rocket, a long-range, guided ballistic missile, was the world's first operational weapon of its kind and represented a significant technological advancement in military warfare. Developed by the German military under the leadership of Wernher von Braun and his team, the V2 rocket was powered by a liquid propellant engine and could reach speeds of over 3,500 miles per hour, traveling up to 250 miles and delivering a one-ton warhead to its target. The mobile launch platform, mounted on a Meillerwagen, allowed the weapon to be transported and launched from various locations, making it a formidable threat. The capture of this V2 rocket marked the end of the German V-weapons program and was a significant achievement for the Allied forces. The technology and knowledge gained from the captured V2 rockets were vital for the development of future missile programs, including the US's own ballistic missile program. This photograph, taken in 1945, provides a glimpse into the history of rocket technology and the pivotal role it played during the closing days of World War II. The V2 rocket, a symbol of both fear and innovation, would forever change the course of military history.
