EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts a Minorca cock and hen, two esteemed Gallus gallus domesticus breeds that graced the pages of Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry," published by Cassell in London in 1890. The intricately detailed image was produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, based on an illustration by J.W. Ludlow. The Minorca chickens, with their distinctive white bodies and black faces, were bred by A.G. Pitts and achieved cup victories in the poultry shows of 1886 and 1887. The Victorian era was a time of great fascination with ornithology and exotic breeds, and the art of poultry showing reached a fever pitch. This image offers a glimpse into the world of poultry breeding during this period, where the focus was on the unique plumage and physical attributes of these birds. While the image may evoke thoughts of cockfighting due to the depiction of the rooster, it is important to note that the practice was already being phased out during this time due to growing opposition. Today, the Minorca breed is appreciated for its elegant appearance and docile nature, making it a popular choice for backyard flocks and shows.
