This black and white portrait showcases the enigmatic and eccentric figure of Marceline, the Spanish-born clown, also known as Marcelino or Marceline the Droll. Marceline rose to fame in the early twentieth century at the newly-opened Hippodrome in London, where he mesmerized audiences with his unique brand of comedy and slapstick performances. His talent did not go unnoticed by young Charlie Chaplin, who as a boy, had the privilege of performing alongside him in the Hippodrome's first Christmas pantomime, Cinderella, in 1907. Marceline's distinctive makeup, featuring exaggerated features and expressive lines, added to his otherworldly appearance and captivating stage presence. His comedic routines, filled with humor and wit, left audiences in stitches and solidified his place as a beloved variety and circus performer. After achieving great success, Marceline made his way to New York City to perform at the Hippodrome there, continuing to delight audiences with his comedic antics. However, as the years passed, Marceline's fortunes took a turn for the worse. Struggling to make ends meet, he eventually took his own life, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and joy that continues to inspire performers to this day.
