EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, and feast your eyes on this snapshot of the legendary Bertram Mills Circus in 1938, taken at the iconic Olympia Theatre in London. This photograph showcases a lively group of clowns, who were an integral part of the circus's entertainment. In the foreground, we have Kelly and Coco, two of the most popular clowns of the era, with their distinctive white-painted faces and pointed hats. To their left, we find Busti, known for his flamboyant frilly collar and expressive face paint. George Sayer, with his red nose and mischievous grin, stands next to him. Moving on, we encounter Pinocchio, whose painted face resembles the famous wooden puppet character from the beloved children's story. Coco-nut, with his exaggerated features and playful expression, is seen in the middle of the group. Pipo, the youngest of the Pinder Brothers, is captured on the right, wearing a striped costume and a cheerful expression. Last but not least, Joe Craston, with his distinctive makeup and pointed hat, completes the lineup. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of British circus entertainment and the enduring appeal of clowns. The clowns' colorful costumes, intricate face paint, and playful expressions continue to evoke joy and wonder, transporting us back in time to a simpler era of entertainment. The Bertram Mills Circus, which ran from 1921 to 1972, was renowned for its high-quality acts and innovative productions. This photograph captures a moment in time when the circus was at the height of its popularity, and these clowns were at the forefront of entertaining generations of audiences.
