EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Rene Primevere for the supplementary lessons of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's renowned natural history work, showcases two critically endangered primates native to Madagascar: the Indri indri, also known as the Indri or Babakoto, and the Red Ruffed Lemur, or Varecia rubra. The Indri, with its distinctive white fur and large, expressive eyes, is the largest species of lemur, while the Red Ruffed Lemur, with its vibrant red fur around its face and arms, is easily recognizable. Both primates are depicted in a lush, forested environment, highlighting their natural habitat. The Indri is shown grasping branches with its long, powerful hands, while the Red Ruffed Lemur clings to a tree trunk, its bushy tail wrapped around a branch for balance. This illustration, produced by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century zoological illustration. As we appreciate the beauty of these primates, it serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these critically endangered species and their habitats.
