EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), was created by Johann Carl Bock in 1786, based on the original observations and illustrations by Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers. The intricately detailed print showcases a diverse array of Lepidoptera species, including the Grey Shoulder Knot (Lithophane ornitopus 1, 2), the Flounced Chestnut (Agrochola helvola 3-5), and the Conformist (Lithophane furcifera 6-9). The Grey Shoulder Knot is depicted with its wings spread wide, revealing the distinctive grey and brown patterns on its forewings and the orange-brown hue on its hindwings. The Flounced Chestnut, also known as the Flounced Wave, is illustrated with its wings folded, displaying the distinctive chestnut-brown coloration and the flounced edges of its wings. The Conformist, or the Dagger Moth, is shown with its wings closed, revealing the intricate patterns on its body and the long, dagger-like tails on its hindwings. This exquisite print also features several other species, such as the Hyppa (Euxoa rectilinea), the Hada (Lithura favillacea), the Plebeja (Polygona marshi), and the Acronicta (Strigosa), among others. The intricate details of their wings, bodies, and other features are beautifully captured in this hand-colored engraving, providing a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating insects. The metamorphosis of these insects from caterpillars to pupa to adult butterflies is a remarkable process, and this print offers a glimpse into the beauty and diversity of the Lepidoptera world during the late 18th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print make it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or entomology.
