EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration by Hugo Wolff-Maage, from Wilhelm Bolsches Das Leben der Urwelt (Prehistoric Life), published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1932, showcases the extinct giant Pterosaurs of the Pteranodon genus. The Pteranodons are depicted with an impressive wingspan of 9 meters, soaring above the Niobrara Sea during the Cretaceous period. During the Upper Cretaceous, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago, the world's continents were arranged differently than they are today. North America was connected to Europe via the European peninsula, while Asia and Gondwanaland (including present-day South America, Africa, Antarctica, and Australia) were separate landmasses. The Niobrara Sea, shown in the background, covered parts of North America and Europe. The Pteranodons were marine reptiles, and their large size and wingspan allowed them to fly above the vast bodies of water. Their elongated heads, with crests or horns, and sharp, hooked beaks, suggest they were apex predators. The Pteranodons' extinction remains a mystery, as no definitive cause has been identified. This illustration, a stunning example of prehistoric zoology and paleontology, offers a glimpse into the rich diversity of life that once inhabited our planet. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the extinct creatures to life, transporting us back in time to the age of the dinosaurs and marine reptiles.
