EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is a reproduction of Plate 167 from Curtis's British Entomology, featuring the Spined Soft-beetle, Malachius bispinosus (now known as Malachius marginellus), as it perches atop the vibrant petals of the Pheasant's Eye plant, Adonis annua. The entomological plate, published between 1824 and 1839, was created by the renowned British naturalist John Curtis and expertly illustrated by F.S. Ledipotera. The meticulously detailed engraving showcases the intricate features of both the beetle and the plant, providing an accurate record of these natural wonders from the 19th century. The Spined Soft-beetle, a member of the Coleoptera family, is characterized by its elongated, slender body and distinctive spines along its edges. This beetle, now identified as Malachius marginellus, was previously believed to be two separate species, Malachius bispinosus and Malachius marginellus, due to slight variations in appearance. The Pheasant's Eye plant, also known as Asonis autumnalis, is a beautiful and rare spring ephemeral that blooms with vivid, golden-yellow flowers. Its common name derives from the resemblance of its seeds to the eyes of a pheasant. The delicate plant is a favorite among pollinators, including various species of butterflies and beetles, such as the one depicted in this entomological plate. This exquisite print offers a captivating glimpse into the natural history of the British Isles during the 1800s, showcasing the intricate relationships between various insects and the plants they rely on for survival. The detailed illustration serves as a testament to the dedication and curiosity of naturalists like John Curtis, who sought to document and preserve the natural world for future generations.
