EDITORS COMMENTS
Battle of Quiberon Bay (Bataille des Cardineaux), near Saint Nazaire, France, 1759: A Moment of Naval Supremacy The roaring waves of Quiberon Bay, off the coast of Saint Nazaire, France, bear witness to one of the most significant naval battles of the 18th century. The Battle of Quiberon Bay, also known as the Battle of the Cardineaux, took place on November 20, 1759, during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) between the British and the French. In this thrilling image, we find ourselves in the midst of the conflict, with British ships, led by Admiral Sir Edward Hawke, engaging the French fleet under the command of the Marquis de Coëtquen. The rough seas add to the intensity of the battle, with towering waves threatening to engulf the ships and their crews. The Battle of Quiberon Bay was a turning point in the Seven Years War, as it marked the end of French naval dominance in the Atlantic. The British victory allowed them to secure their control over the French colonies in North America and significantly weakened the French navy. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of Admiral James Grant's flagship, the HMS Monmouth, prominently displayed in the foreground. Grant, who would later be replaced by Hawke as the commander of the British fleet, played a crucial role in the battle's early stages. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to a time of war and naval supremacy. The brave sailors, their faces set with determination, stand resolute against the backdrop of the tumultuous sea. This powerful and evocative print, by TERRY PARKER from Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a testament to the courage and tenacity of those who fought in the Battle of Quiberon Bay and the pivotal role it played in the history of naval warfare.
