Manchester Regiment capture Givenchy 1914

The Manchester Regiment capture the occupied village of Givenchy on 20th December 1914. The area had been the scene of fighting for several days, as British and Indian forces sought to attack the Germans entrenched around the village in order to relieve the pressure on the French at Arras during the First Battle of Champagne. With a German counter attack having succeeded in taking part of the village, the Manchesters were part of a reserve force introduced to the fighting to re-occupy Givenchy. The opposing lines were back to how they had started by 22 December, for the loss of thousands of lives. Date: 20 December 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of triumph for the Manchester Regiment as they retook the occupied village of Givenchy on the Western Front on 20th December 1914. The First Battle of Champagne had been raging since September, with the British and Indian forces attempting to relieve the pressure on the French at Arras. The village of Givenchy had been a focal point of intense fighting, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In this image, we see members of the Manchester Regiment proudly displaying the Union Jack flag over the captured village, having successfully repelled a German counter attack that had taken part of the village just days prior. The opposing lines had been back to their original positions by the 22nd of December, leaving thousands of lives lost in the process. Fortunino Matania, a renowned Italian-born war artist, captured this poignant moment in history. Matania's artistry and attention to detail are evident in the intricately depicted snow-covered landscape and the determined expressions of the soldiers. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the brutal and costly nature of trench warfare during World War I.
