Grant at the McLean House in Appomattox Court House, Virginia, marking the end of the Civil War. The Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, was a pivotal period in the United States' history, resulting in the deaths of over 600,000 soldiers and civilians and the emancipation of over 3 million enslaved people.
