EDITORS COMMENTS
This miniature painting, housed in the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France, showcases a gathering of four esteemed Roman figures: Gaius Laelius, Marcus Cato the Elder, Titus Pomponius Atticus, and Scipio Africanus the Younger. The painting is a representation from Cicero's essay on old age, titled "De Senectute," and dates back to the Gothic art period. Gaius Laelius, depicted on the far left, was a Roman consul who accompanied Scipio Africanus in the campaigns of Spain, Sicily, and Africa. His presence in this esteemed company is a testament to his military prowess and political acumen. Marcus Porcius Cato the Elder, or Cato the Censor, is shown in the middle of the painting. He was a renowned Roman politician and moralist, known for his strict adherence to traditional Roman values. Cato's influence on Roman law and politics was profound, and his legacy continues to be felt to this day. Titus Pomponius Atticus, the Latin erudite, is depicted on the right-hand side of the painting. He was a close friend of Cicero and a prominent figure in Roman intellectual circles. Atticus was a patron of the arts and a generous benefactor, known for his wisdom and erudition. Scipio Africanus the Younger, the final figure in this illustrious quartet, is shown next to Atticus. He was a Roman general and statesman, who continued the military and political legacy of his famous namesake, Scipio Africanus the Elder. Scipio Africanus the Younger's military campaigns in Numidia and Spain cemented his place in Roman history as a brilliant military strategist and a capable leader.
