EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Jean-Baptiste Drouet (1763-1824), a pivotal figure in the French Revolution. Born in 1763, Drouet rose to prominence as a statesman and a relentless advocate for the rights of the common people. Drouet's political career began in earnest during the French Revolution, when he was elected as a deputy to the National Assembly in 1789. He quickly became a vocal supporter of the revolutionary cause, using his eloquence and persuasive skills to advocate for the abolition of feudalism and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy. Despite facing numerous challenges and threats to his safety, Drouet remained steadfast in his convictions. In 1791, he played a key role in drafting the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which enshrined the fundamental principles of liberty, equality, and property rights. Throughout the tumultuous years of the revolution, Drouet continued to serve as a deputy in various legislative bodies, working tirelessly to promote the interests of the common people. He was a vocal opponent of the Reign of Terror and played a crucial role in the negotiations that led to the establishment of the Directory, the government that ruled France from 1795 to 1799. This print captures Drouet in the prime of his political career, with a determined expression and a pen in hand, symbolizing his commitment to the written word as a tool for change. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads, "Jean-Baptiste Drouet, Citizen of Paris," a testament to his status as a true revolutionary and a champion of the people.
