EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Reverend Harry Bull (1866-1947), the enigmatic rector of Borley, Essex, England, between 1892 and 1927, standing amongst his devoted church choir members in 1927. The image, taken circa 1900, exudes a sense of history and tradition, with the choir members dressed in their formal robes, their faces serious and focused as they prepare for a service. Borley, a small village nestled in the English countryside, has long been associated with paranormal activity. Reports of hauntings at the local church and rectory date back to the 13th century, and the village gained notoriety in the late 1920s when the Daily Mirror published a series of sensational articles about the supposed haunting of Borley Rectory. Despite the rumors of ghostly apparitions and other strange occurrences, Reverend Bull remained committed to his duties and the welfare of his congregation. He was a respected figure in the community, known for his charitable works and his dedication to the church. The rectory, which can be seen in the background of the photograph, is a striking Tudor-style building that has since been demolished. Its replacement, built in the 1930s, stands on the same site today. The original rectory, with its mysterious past and tales of hauntings, has become a popular tourist attraction and a source of fascination for paranormal enthusiasts. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, a moment in time when the Reverend Bull and his choir stood together, united in their faith and their love of music, oblivious to the strange happenings that would later make Borley a byword for the paranormal.
