EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by John Lee after an illustration by T. Webster, showcases a diverse array of musical instruments from the early 19th century. The image is taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London in 1820. At the center of the enchanting composition, we find various types of flutes: an English flute (1), two German flutes (2 and 3), and an improved German flute with additional keys (3). The English flute, with its simple design and straight body, stands in contrast to the more complex German flutes, which feature a curved body and a more intricate key system. To the right, we see two hautboys or oboes (4 and 5), their bulbous bodies and double reeds ready to produce rich, full-bodied sounds. Nearby, a B fife (6) and a C fife (7) are depicted, their small size and slender bodies making them ideal for playing lively tunes. An English flageolet (8) is also present, its slender shape and simple key system creating a bright, piercing tone. In the lower left corner, a gong (9) is shown, its large, flat surface designed to produce resonant, powerful sounds when struck. A tabour (10) and a pipe (11) complete the ensemble, their drums and pipes adding depth and rhythm to the melody. This beautiful engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of musical instruments from over two centuries ago, showcasing the variety and intricacy of the instruments used during that time. The meticulous detail and exquisite craftsmanship of the engraving make it a true treasure for anyone with an interest in music history.
