EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of Mrs Mary Beatrice Crowle, one of the earliest women police officers in London during the First World War. Mrs Crowle, whose husband Captain J.N. Crowle was also an active member of the suffragette movement, joined the Metropolitan Police Force as part of a special women's patrol unit established at the beginning of the war. Dressed in her full uniform, Mrs Crowle dons a brimmed hat with a distinctive armband and collar, signifying her status as a member of the Metropolitan Police. Her coat and overcoat are adorned with various insignia, including the police crest, and she wears gloves to protect her hands. Her determined expression and posture convey a sense of duty and commitment to her role in serving and protecting her community during a time of great upheaval. The establishment of women in the police force was a significant step towards gender equality in the workforce. Women's roles in the police force expanded during wartime due to the need for more manpower on the front lines. Mrs Crowle's service as a police officer not only contributed to the war effort but also paved the way for future generations of women in law enforcement. This photograph is a testament to the courage and resilience of women during the early 1900s, who defied societal norms and expectations to make a difference in their communities and beyond. Mrs Crowle's legacy continues to inspire women in law enforcement and beyond, as they continue to break barriers and make history.
