EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles V, also known as Charles the Wise, was the King of France from 1364 until his death in 1380. This striking handcolored copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Leopold Massard, depicts Charles V in his military attire, showcasing the grandeur and intricacy of medieval royal fashion. The image reveals a king dressed in an impressive array of armor, including a chainmail hauberk, buffalo hide justaucorps, plate armor, greaves, cuisses, gauntlets, and a belt adorned with precious stones. The crown atop his head, with its intricate design and jewels, symbolizes his royal status and power. Charles V was a skilled military leader, and this costume reflects his readiness for battle. The armor, a combination of chainmail and plate armor, would have provided excellent protection against arrows and swords. The gauntlets, with their intricate designs and fur lining, would have offered additional protection for his hands. The use of a buffalo hide justaucorps, a long, sleeveless coat made of animal hide, is an interesting choice for a military costume. This type of armor was popular during the medieval period, and its thick, heavy material would have provided excellent protection against arrows and other projectiles. This engraving is taken from the book "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days," published in Paris in 1834. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of the handcoloring bring the image to life, allowing us to appreciate the grandeur and intricacy of medieval royal fashion.
