EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the raw intensity and determination of Australian troops during the Gallipoli Campaign in the First World War. The image, dated 29 May 1915, depicts members of the 15th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, as they prepare for an attack on Quinns Post in Turkey. The post was a strategic position held by the Ottoman forces, and the Australians launched a series of assaults to gain control of it throughout May. The soldiers in the photograph are seen huddled together in a trench, their faces etched with focus and resolve. Many are armed with rifles, while others carry bayonets and other weapons. Dust and debris are visible in the air, indicating the chaos and violence of the battlefield. In the background, the silhouettes of other soldiers can be seen advancing towards the enemy lines. The Gallipoli Campaign was a significant turning point in the First World War, with heavy casualties on both sides. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps suffered particularly heavy losses, with over 8,000 deaths and 17,000 wounded. Despite the hardships and sacrifices, the campaign helped to forge a strong sense of national identity among the Australian and New Zealand troops, and is still commemorated as an important part of their military history. This powerful photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought in the Gallipoli Campaign, and the sacrifices they made for their country.
