EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fragment of the "Saint John Jerome Crucifixion" engraving, believed to have been created in the 1490s. Measuring approximately 5 11/16 by 2 7/8 inches (14.5 x 7.3 cm), this trimmed sheet features intricate figures and exquisite details that are characteristic of the renowned artist Francesco Rosselli. Hailing from Florence (1448–1508) and later Venice, Rosselli was highly regarded for his exceptional craftsmanship and artistic vision. It is speculated that this particular piece might have been produced after a design by Filippino Lippi, an Italian painter born in Prato around 1457. The composition itself depicts Saint John Jerome during the crucifixion, capturing a profound moment of religious significance. The viewer is drawn into the scene through the delicate lines and masterful shading employed by Rosselli or possibly Lippi. This remarkable print allows art enthusiasts to appreciate not only the skillful execution but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Renaissance art. Whether displayed in homes or galleries, this fragment invites contemplation on themes of faith, devotion, and human emotion evoked through visual storytelling.
