EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection takes us back in time to ancient Rome, offering a detailed plan of the city's iconic landmarks. In this particular image, we are presented with a panoramic view that showcases the magnificent Pantheon on the lower left side and a triumphal arch on the right. The etching itself is an impressive work of art, consisting of sixteen separate sheets meticulously joined together and backed with linen. Measuring at 18 5/16 by 27 3/8 inches (or approximately 46.5 by 69.5 centimeters), this print was created by Carlo Nolli, an Italian artist hailing from Como. Born in 1724 and active until after 1770 in Naples, Nolli collaborated with Francesco Monaco to issue this remarkable piece alongside Giovanni Battista Nolli's larger plan of Rome. Interestingly enough, this original depiction is based on Leonardo Bufalini's woodcut published back in 1551. It is fascinating to see how historical records have been preserved through various artistic mediums throughout centuries. As we gaze upon this extraordinary artwork, we can't help but marvel at the grandeur and architectural brilliance that once graced ancient Rome's streets. This print serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with history and our desire to explore past civilizations through visual representations like these prints offered by Artokoloro.
