EDITORS COMMENTS
In the Troops Quarters outside Paris, 1870/71" is a captivating print that offers a glimpse into the lives of German soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War. The image showcases the headquarters of the German army at Chateau de Brunoy, which they have temporarily requisitioned as their accommodation. Contrasting with the luxurious and pastel-colored interior of the chateau, these energetic soldiers are depicted as red-cheeked individuals wearing dirty boots. Despite their rugged appearance, it becomes evident that these men possess a cultured side as they engage in activities such as singing and playing piano. What sets this scene apart is not only their ability to appreciate finer things but also their respect for their enemy's property. Instead of burning furniture for warmth, they have collected firewood to keep themselves comfortable amidst challenging circumstances. The photograph itself is based on a painting created in 1894 by Anton Alexander von Werner and can be found in Berlin's Alte Nationalgalerie. It was later included in "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" an album featuring cigarette cards from Cigaretten-Bilderdienst. This historical snapshot captures both the resilience and humanity displayed by soldiers during times of war. It serves as a reminder that even amidst conflict, cultural appreciation and acts of compassion can still find room to flourish.
