National Government composed of members from the three main political parties, 1931 (1937)
National Government composed of members from the three main political parties, 1931 (1937). An economic crisis in 1931 led to the resignation of Ramsay MacDonalds Labour government. After talks with the King and the leaders of the Conservative and Liberal parties, MacDonald agreed to lead a National Government with ministers drawn from all three parties in order to balance the budget and restore confidence in the economy. The Labour Party was firmly opposed to the National Government and expelled all its members who joined and supported it, including MacDonald. A print from The Story of Seventy Momentous Years, the Life and Times of King George V, 1865-1936, editor Harold Wheeler, Odhams Press Ltd, London, 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in British political history - the formation of the National Government in 1931. The country was facing an economic crisis, leading to the resignation of Ramsay MacDonald's Labour government. In order to restore confidence and balance the budget, MacDonald agreed to lead a coalition government with members from all three main political parties. The image showcases key figures who played crucial roles in this historic event. Among them are Ramsay MacDonald, Neville Chamberlain, Stanley Baldwin, Philip Snowden (1st Viscount Snowden), and Herbert Samuel (1st Viscount Samuel). These statesmen came together with a common goal: to navigate Britain through troubled times. However, this decision was not without controversy. The Labour Party strongly opposed the National Government and expelled its members who supported it, including their own leader Ramsay MacDonald. This division within the party reflected the deep-seated ideological differences that existed during this period. The photograph provides us with a glimpse into this diverse group of politicians united by national interest rather than party lines. Their collective efforts aimed at steering Britain towards stability and prosperity amidst challenging circumstances demonstrate their dedication to public service. Preserved as part of "The Story of Seventy Momentous Years" edited by Harold Wheeler and published by Odhams Press Ltd in 1937, this print serves as a reminder of how political leaders can come together for the greater good when faced with adversity.
