EDITORS COMMENTS
Fingal's Cave: A Majestic Natural Wonder and Musical Inspiration". This print takes us back to the late 19th century, capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of Fingal's Cave in Scotland. Renowned artist John L Stoddard skillfully immortalized this geographical wonder, which served as a muse for Felix Mendelssohn's famous overture, The Hebrides. Located on the southwest coast of Staffa in the Scottish Inner Hebrides, Fingal's Cave is a testament to nature's artistic prowess. Formed by basalt lava flows that cooled into remarkable hexagonal columns resembling those found at Northern Ireland's Giants Causeway, this cave stands as an extraordinary example of geological marvels. The monochrome image showcases the rugged coastline and turbulent sea surrounding this enchanting island. The Victorian-era landscape exudes tranquility while simultaneously evoking a sense of mystery and adventure. Stoddard's photograph not only captures the raw beauty of Fingal’s Cave but also highlights its cultural significance. As one gazes upon these ancient rocks standing tall against crashing waves, it becomes evident why Mendelssohn was inspired to compose such stirring music based on this very location. Through this print from his Portfolio of Photographs series published by Werner Company in Chicago around 1899, Stoddard invites us to appreciate both science and art intertwined within Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes. Let yourself be transported back in time as you explore Fingal’s Cave through Stoddard’s lens – a true masterpiece capturing nature’s grandeur.
