7342156 On London River, 1918 (watercolour on card) by Everett, John (1876-1949); 53x76 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Herbert Barnard John Everett
During the First World War, John Everett was at first unable to sketch outdoors due to wartime security regulations, but in the spring of 1918, the Ministry of Information asked him to depict London river scenes.
This busy river scene shows a wealth of steam vessels of various sizes, painted in vibrant dazzle camouflage. In the foreground, a bargeman draws the viewer's eye into the composition, but also gives a sense of the scale of the ships. Dazzle was a type of camouflage developed by the artist Norman Wilkinson in 1917, in response to the heavy losses sustained by British merchant ships to German U-boat submarines.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour print by John Everett captures the bustling activity of London's river in 1918 during the First World War. Despite wartime restrictions on outdoor sketching, Everett was commissioned by the Ministry of Information to depict scenes along the river Thames. The painting showcases a variety of steam vessels adorned in vibrant dazzle camouflage, a technique developed to protect British merchant ships from German U-boat attacks.
In the foreground, a bargeman commands attention as he navigates his rowboat through the busy waters, providing scale and perspective to the composition. The intricate details and lively colors bring this historical moment to life, offering viewers a glimpse into London's maritime past.
Everett's skillful rendering of light and movement creates a sense of energy and motion within the scene, transporting us back to a time when steamships ruled these waters. This artwork serves as both a visual record of wartime transportation and an artistic tribute to London's enduring connection with its iconic river.
