This print showcases "The Danaides (gravure)" by the French School in the 19th century. The artwork depicts a haunting scene from Greek mythology, illustrating the Daughters of Danaus who committed a gruesome act on their wedding night. In this tragic tale, all but one of these women killed their husbands and were condemned to an eternal punishment of carrying water in a sieve. The gravure, created by Goupil & Co. , is based on H Leroux's painting and was featured in "The Chefs-D Oeuvre d Art of the International Exhibition" edited by Edward Straham in 1878. This digitally cleaned image allows us to appreciate every intricate detail captured during that time. As we delve into this piece, we are transported back to ancient Greece where tradition and classicism reign supreme.
