Do You Know: Of what crosses does the Union Jack consist? (colour litho)
8668117 Do You Know: Of what crosses does the Union Jack consist? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Of what crosses does the Union Jack consist? The Union Jack - properly the Great Union - is composed of the banner of St George - white with a red cross; the banner of St Andrew - blue with a white diagonal cross: and the banner of St Patrick - white with a red diagonal cross. The first Union flag showed a blending of the banners of England and Scotland (St George and St Andrew), at the union in 1603. At the union with Ireland in 1801, the banner of St Patrick was added, and the diagonal crosses, or saltires, were "contercharged" in such a way that in the first and third quarters the white saltire, and in the second and fourth the red saltire, is uppermost.
