In 1822 the French appointed commission to finding the speed of sound in air. Two hills near Paris chosen for the experiment at Villejuif and Montlhery. On each hill a gun was discharged. Observers on the other hill, by noting the time of flash and time at which they heard report, calculated the speed to be 1, 118.152 feet (340.8m) per second. Gay-Lussac, Humboldt and Bouvard at Montlhery: Arago, Mathieu and Prony were at Villejuif. From Robert Brown Science for All, London, c.1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of physics. In 1822, a French-appointed commission embarked on a groundbreaking experiment to determine the speed of sound in air. Two hills near Paris, Villejuif and Montlhery, were carefully chosen as the sites for this scientific endeavor. On each hill, a powerful gun was discharged, creating a flash that caught the attention of observers stationed on the opposite hill. These keen individuals meticulously noted the time at which they saw the flash and then recorded when they heard the report of the gunshot. By analyzing these precise timings, they were able to calculate that sound travels through air at an astonishing speed of 1,118.152 feet (340.8m) per second. The distinguished scientists involved in this experiment included Gay-Lussac, Humboldt, Bouvard at Montlhery; Arago, Mathieu and Prony were stationed at Villejuif. Their collaborative efforts paved the way for advancements in our understanding of acoustics and laid down crucial foundations for future research. This remarkable image is taken from Robert Brown's "Science for All" published around 1880 in London. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout history - reminding us how far we have come in unraveling nature's mysteries through scientific exploration.
