Horsehead nebula
Horsehead nebula. The horses head is the silhouette of the dark dust cloud Barnard 33 (B33) against the bright emission nebula IC 434. IC 434 emits light as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionised by radiation from a nearby hot young star. The nebula lies around 1500 light years away in the constellation Orion. It is part of an enormous cloud of gas and dust called the Orion Complex, which is an active starbirth region
