Cumberland Market CXP01_01_135

CUMBERLAND MARKET, REGENTS PARK, CAMDEN, GREATER LONDON. A view looking north-east across Cumberland Market towards Edward Street and terraced houses and vacant shops on the east side of the square.
Cumberland Market was a hay and straw market from the early 19th century to the late 1920s. By the early 1930s buildings in the area were demolished to make way for council housing and yet more of the area was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. The remaining buildings were demolished in 1950-51 and the Regents Park Estate was built on the site

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Cumberland Market, a once vibrant hub in Regents Park, Camden, Greater London. As we gaze upon the image, our eyes are drawn to the north-east view across Cumberland Market towards Edward Street. The terraced houses and vacant shops on the east side of the square stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era. Cumberland Market held great significance as a hay and straw market from the early 19th century until its decline in the late 1920s. Sadly, this historic area suffered multiple blows throughout history. In the early 1930s, buildings were demolished to make way for council housing, only to be further devastated by bombing during World War II. The remaining structures met their fate in 1950-51 when they were finally torn down. However, out of this loss and destruction emerged something new - the Regents Park Estate now stands proudly on this very site. Through Charles William Prickett's lens, we are transported back in time to witness both beauty and tragedy intertwined within Cumberland Market's story. This print serves as a poignant reminder of how urban landscapes evolve over time and how communities adapt amidst adversity. Let us cherish these glimpses into history that remind us of what was lost while celebrating what has been rebuilt upon those foundations.
