The Cedars OFH01_01_01_f09_02

The Cedars, Ranelagh Road, Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The western terrace of The Cedars, seen from the south west.
The Cedars was built in 1853, between what is now Deodar Road (formerly Ranelagh Road) and the River Thames. The development comprised two grand terraces. Plans for further development were never realised. The building of the District Railway led to the demolition of three of the houses in the west terrace and made The Ceders less desirable to the middle class Victorians the houses were intended for. The houses gradually fell into a poor state of repair and by 1890 both terraces had been demolished.
This photograph appears in William Fields's Photographs of Putney, compiled by Dorian Gerhold and Michael Bull for the Wandsworth Historical Society

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a glimpse of the past, showcasing the western terrace of The Cedars in Putney, Wandsworth. Built in 1853, this grand Victorian development was once an epitome of elegance and prosperity. However, time has taken its toll on these houses as they gradually fell into disrepair. The image depicts a scene from the south-west perspective, offering a unique view of The Cedars' architectural splendor. Adorned with bill posters and advertisements that reflect the vibrant life surrounding it, this snapshot also hints at the changing times and urban decay that eventually led to its demise. Intriguingly, plans for further development were never realized due to unforeseen circumstances. The construction of the District Railway resulted in three houses being demolished from the west terrace. This unfortunate turn of events made The Cedars less desirable to its intended middle-class Victorian residents. By 1890, both terraces had succumbed to dereliction and were ultimately demolished altogether. Today, all that remains are memories captured by photographs like this one – remnants of a bygone era filled with charm and aspirations for progress. Preserved within William Fields's collection titled "Photographs of Putney" compiled by Dorian Gerhold and Michael Bull for the Wandsworth Historical Society, this particular print serves as a poignant reminder of change over time – an ode to an era lost but not forgotten.
