EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Brighton, Sussex. Standing proudly on Western Road is the iconic Woolworths store, a true symbol of classic British high street shopping. The front facade, captured from the south-east angle, showcases its grandeur and timeless charm. Dating back to 1916, this Woolworths store was an integral part of the community for over nine decades. In 1964, it underwent a modernization process and saw a reduction in size. However, it continued to serve as a beloved shopping destination until its closure in 2008. The significance of this historic establishment is not lost on us; it witnessed countless generations strolling through its doors in search of everyday essentials or delightful treasures. Today's generation may remember Clinton Cards occupying part of the premises after Woolworths' closure. Nowadays, H&M has taken over this cherished space since opening their doors here in 2009. While times have changed and new businesses have emerged, this photograph serves as a reminder of our shared history and nostalgia for simpler times. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot's expertly captured image beautifully encapsulates the essence of Woolworths – with its white exterior adorned by vibrant blue and red accents that catch your eye even today. It stands as a testament to an era when shopping at "Woolies" was an experience filled with joy and excitement along Brighton's lively streetscape.
