Wreck of the "Superb" Steamer, 1850. The wreck of the Superb occurred on the Minquiers Rocks [about 15 km south of Jersey in the Channel Islands] and resulted in the loss of eleven persons, who perished in smooth water and in broad daylight...She struck violently at half-past nine a.m. on the sunken rocks, and immediately filled with water; her bows having been thrown on the rocks, caused her to heel over, throwing the passengers on the starboard side of the vessel. The captain, it is said, immediately ordered the boats (of which there were only two) to be lowered. The fire at the same moment was extinguished by the water, and an immediate rush was made for the other boat; but all who entered it found a watery grave, for there is reason to believe that the plugs were not in the beat, and they got off without an oar...The survivors are about 40 in number'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the aftermath of the tragic wreck of the Superb Steamer in 1850. The exact creator of this photograph remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News, providing a chilling account of the events that unfolded on that fateful day. The Superb Steamer struck the Minquiers Rocks, located about 15 km south of Jersey in the Channel Islands. The wreck resulted in the loss of eleven lives, claimed in smooth water and in broad daylight. The ship struck the rocks at half-past nine in the morning, filling with water almost instantly. The bows of the vessel were thrown onto the rocks, causing it to heel over and throwing passengers onto the starboard side. Despite the immediate order to launch the boats, only two were available. The fire on the ship was extinguished by the water, but the rush for the remaining boat proved fatal for many. Reports suggest that the plugs were not in place, and those who entered the boat were unable to row to safety. Survivors numbered around 40, a fortunate few who managed to escape the icy waters and the grim fate that befell their shipmates. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable and treacherous nature of the sea, and the importance of preparation and caution when navigating its depths.
