EDITORS COMMENTS
Willowmere," located at 435 Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor, New York, is a historic Colonial Revival house that once belonged to Rear Admiral Aaron Ward. The house, which dates back to circa 1770, was inherited by Elizabeth Cairns Ward in 1882 and underwent expansions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this photograph taken in the 1910s, the exterior of the house is showcased in all its glory. The house is surrounded by lush greenery, with trees and flower beds adorning the landscape. The garden design is a testament to the beauty and elegance of the estate, with roses and other flowers adding vibrant colors to the scene. The lantern slides in this image have been hand-colored, enhancing the natural beauty of the setting. The serene atmosphere of the garden invites one to imagine the peaceful life that once was lived within the walls of Willowmere. The house, now a heritage site, stands as a reminder of the rich history and architectural heritage of Roslyn Harbor, Nassau County, New York, in the United States of America. This photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston in the early 20th century, is a stunning example of her work and a valuable addition to the Library of Congress collection.
