Virgin and Child Enthroned, with Saints Jerome and John the Baptist and a Carthusian Monk, c.1510.
The Virgin is enthroned beneath a canopy on the left. The Christ Child on her lap is leafing through a book with his right hand while reaching out with his other hand, in which he has a rosary, towards the donor, a Carthusian monk, who is kneeling in prayer and being presented to the Virgin and Child by John the Baptist accompanied by the Lamb of God (John 1:29). In the centre St Jerome stands in front of a window with a view of a building, possibly a monastery. Standing in the right background is a figure in an enclosed garden, which is a symbol of chastity and Mary's virginity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 16th century painting, 'Virgin and Child Enthroned, with Saints Jerome and John the Baptist and a Carthusian Monk' by Jan Provoost, captures the essence of devotion and piety. The Virgin Mary, seated on a throne under a richly decorated canopy, cradles the Christ Child in her arms. The infant Jesus, demonstrating his scholarly nature, leafs through a book while reaching out towards the donor, a Carthusian monk, who humbly prays before them. The monk is presented to the Virgin and Child by John the Baptist, accompanied by the Lamb of God, symbolizing Jesus' identity as the sacrificial lamb. In the background, St. Jerome stands before a window, possibly gazing upon a monastery, emphasizing his role as a scholar and translator of the Bible. A figure in an enclosed garden, symbolizing chastity and Mary's virginity, can be seen in the right background. The painting is a testament to the deep reverence and devotion to the Virgin Mary and the significance of the Carthusian Order during the period. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and biblical characters all contribute to the richness and depth of this masterpiece by Jan Provoost.
