View Taken in the Forests of Peel Island, Bonin Islands, 19th century. Creators: Alexander Postels, Godefroy Engelmann

View Taken in the Forests of Peel Island, Bonin Islands, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "View Taken in the Forests of Peel Island, Bonin Islands," offers a rare glimpse into the unspoiled natural wonders of 19th century Japan. Created by Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann as part of an extensive collection documenting the round-the-world voyage commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, this particular print showcases the enchanting forests found on Peel Island. The lithograph is one among sixty-five exquisite prints that were published after Captain Fedor Litke's expedition aboard the corvette Seniavin between 1826 and 1829. The journey began in Kronstadt, Russia's main naval base near Saint Petersburg, taking them through treacherous waters around Cape Horn to reach their destination in the Pacific Ocean. In this mesmerizing scene captured on paper, we are transported to a serene forest setting on Peel Island. The intricate details rendered through lithography bring forth every leaf and branch with remarkable precision. As we immerse ourselves in this image from centuries past, we can almost feel a sense of tranquility permeating through nature's untouched beauty. The print not only serves as a visual delight but also holds immense historical significance. It stands as a testament to Russia's scientific naval surveys during that era when exploration was at its peak. Through these expeditions led by pioneers like Litke and artists like Postels and Engelmann, knowledge about distant lands was brought back home for all to appreciate. Today, housed within the Library of Congress' Congressional Library collection, this lithograph continues to be cherished as both an artistic masterpiece and an invaluable record of our planet's rich heritage. Its monochromatic tones evoke nostalgia while reminding us of humanity's enduring fascination with nature’s wonders – an eternal connection that transcends time and place.
