Study of Hands, 1842. Creator: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780-1867)
Study of Hands, 1842. At the height of his fame, Ingres received an important commission from King Louis-Philippe. When the Duke of Orleans was killed in a carriage accident at the age of 32, King Louis-Philippe bought the land surrounding the site in order to have a chapel built to commemorate his eldest son. The king personally requested that Ingres be the sole artist responsible for the designs for the chapels stained glass windows. The study of hands in an attitude of prayer relates to the window composition for Saint Rosalia, and the study of clasped hands in the lower left relate to Saint Amelia. The gentle rhythm created by the arrangement of hands on the sheet and subtle, sensitive modeling confirm Ingres as a master of draftsmanship

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Study of Hands, 1842" by the renowned French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. At the pinnacle of his career, Ingres was entrusted with a significant commission from King Louis-Philippe. Following the tragic death of the Duke of Orleans in a carriage accident at just 32 years old, King Louis-Philippe acquired the surrounding land to construct a chapel in honor of his eldest son. Personally handpicking Ingres as the sole artist responsible for designing stained glass windows for this commemorative chapel, it is evident that he held great esteem in royal circles. In this particular study, we witness hands delicately posed in prayerful gestures, which would later be incorporated into Saint Rosalia's window composition. Additionally, clasped hands depicted on the lower left side relate to Saint Amelia. The arrangement of these hands creates an elegant and harmonious rhythm across the sheet while showcasing Ingres' exceptional draftsmanship skills. Rendered using graphite with traces of white heightening, this drawing exemplifies Ingres' mastery over capturing subtle nuances and sensitive modeling. As one gazes upon this artwork, it becomes clear why he is considered a true virtuoso within his field. Presented by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any company), this print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate and admire one aspect of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' extraordinary artistic legacy from 19th-century France.
